BOOSTNB

Background

WHO WE ARE
We are a group of undergraduate students at the University of New Brunswick, working under the guidance of the Vaughan Chair in Regional Economics, Dr. Herb Emery. Learn more in the About Us page.

WHAT WE DO
In 2016, the Government of New Brunswick released its Economic Growth Plan, which outlines potential sources of growth for the province while citing the importance of innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation. BoostNB includes some of the provincial government’s goals among the economic indicators for industries.

BoostNB was inspired by OneNS, which tracks Nova Scotia’s progress towards meeting the nineteen proposed goals of the 2014 Ivany Report. Like OneNS and the Ivany Report, BoostNB uses private sector-led growth as the framework for understanding New Brunswick’s economic performance and progress towards sustainable growth.

HOW WE DO IT
While many of the BoostNB goals are based on the OneNS indicators, they have been adjusted to account for differences between the two provinces. The numbering of the BoostNB goals corresponds with OneNS's goals for easy comparison. However, not all goals were adapted, hence some gaps in numbering.

The BoostNB also goes further to focus on some goals that are not considered by OneNS. Each indicator is based on open source data from Statistics Canada and a range of provincial sources; this ensures that the presented material can be easily replicated. The indicators have also been developed in such a way that allows current information to be updated as new data becomes available.

WHY WE DO IT
Topics like immigration, post-secondary education, private sector growth, GDP, and more are crucial in policymaking, and we want to equip decision makers with the knowledge they need to move New Brunswick in the right direction. We also want to provide an accessible resource for the general public so citizens can stay informed on issues that matter to them.
